The solitary ascidian Herdmania momus is one of the most commonly encountered species of ascidians. While commonly referred to simply as sea squirts, this name is ambiguous, as it can refer to any member of the sub-phylum Tunicata. This solitary ascidian is sometimes referred to as the red-throated ascidian, as its two siphons are a vivid red in colour.

According to the traditional classification, the class Ascidiacea is subdivided into three major orders: Phlebobranchia, Aplousobranchia, and Stolidobranchia. In contrast with this taxonomic view, 18S rRNA-based phylogenies have shown that ascidians are in fact paraphyletic ( 32 - 34 ).
In the scheme of classification, the animals kingdom is divided first into several majore animal groups called phyla. There are approximately 30 animal phyla currently recognized. The last major group of the animal kingdom is known as phylum chordata. It was created by Balfour in 1880.
The Red-throated Ascidian is a solitary species common in Sydney's coastal waters. Identification. The Red-throated Ascidian has a thick, white or semi-transparent outer covering, and two prominent, red-rimmed siphons that it uses to filter plankton from the water.
Abstract. Revision of material from Australian waters previously assigned to Herdmania momus (Savigny, 1816) has resulted in the recognition of five species (i.
The only known example of a completely vateritic mineralized structure is the spicule of the solitary ascidian, Herdmania momus. In characterizing the structure of these spicules, using state-of-the-art techniques such as synchrotron X-ray diffraction and synchrotron micro- and nanotomography, we observed a continuous structural pattern from the macro down to the micro, nano, and atomic scales.
The solitary ascidian Herdmania momus (Savigny, 1816) was first recorded in the Eastern basin of the Mediterranean, off the coast of Israel, in 1958. Since then, H. momus established along the shores of Israel, albeit restricted to artificial substrates (e.g., pier pillars, artificial reefs, and shipwrecks) and deeper waters (20-30 m) in comparison to its native range.
Other Characters of Chordates:. These include bilateral symmetry, three germinal layers, segmentation, organ-system level of organisation, cephalization, coelom, endoskeleton, complete digestive tract, special organs for respiration and excretion, closed circulatory system, separate sexes, gonads with gonoducts and without asexual reproduction.
Observations on the symbiotic relationship between the caridean shrimp Odontonia sibogae (Bruce, 1972) and its ascidian host Herdmania momus (Savigny, 1816).

Essay on the different classification of phylum chordate Article shared by On the basis of presence of notochord and cranium (brain box) phylum chordata can be divided into two groups-Acraniata (Protochordata) and Craniata (Euchordata).

Feeding. The sea squirt has two openings in its small body. One opening, called the oral siphon, sucks water into the animal; the other opening, called the atrial siphon, squirts water out of the animal.Inside is a little basket-like sieve which traps food: so these sea squirts are filter feeders. The Sea squirt can close the holes in its siphons, like a drawstring can close the opening in a bag.
